User Override in Moodle
print icon

This guide will walk you through how to create a user override for a quiz or test in Moodle. User overrides allow instructors to adjust quiz settings—such as availability dates, time limits, and number of attempts—for individual students. This is particularly useful for providing accommodations or managing makeup exams.

 Prerequisites

Before you begin, ensure you have:

  • An active Moodle instructor or editing teacher account.

  • A quiz or test already created in your course.

  • The name of the student(s) who require an override.

 Instructions

  1. Click on your Quiz/Test

  2. Click on the gear icon in the upper right hand corner of the quiz/test

  3. Click on "User overrides"

  4. Click on "Add user override"

  5. Type the student's name

  6. Select the student

  7. Check "Enable" on the quiz open and close dates and times and adjust as desired

  8. Click "Save" or "Save and enter another override" if there are multiple students

Note: Overrides only apply to the selected student. If multiple students need the same settings, you’ll need to repeat the steps for each one individually.

 Tips & Notes

  • You can also adjust other settings in the override, such as the time limit or number of attempts allowed.

  • If a student is not appearing in the dropdown list, ensure they are enrolled in the course.

  • Be sure to double-check the override settings—especially date and time—to avoid student access issues.
